Bhai Dooj closes the five days of Diwali. A sister puts a tilak on her brother’s forehead, prays for his long life and feeds him something she made; he gives her a gift and his word that he will look out for her. The story behind it is Yama visiting his sister Yamuna, who welcomed him with a tilak and a meal — which is why the day is also called Yama Dwitiya. When you cannot sit across the plate from each other, the words have to carry the whole ritual.
Send it before the tilak time, not after
The tilak is traditionally done in the afternoon, after the family has eaten together. If you are apart, send the link in the morning so it is waiting when that moment comes, and plan a video call for the afternoon — hold up the thali, or the sweets you would have fed them. A message that arrives at night reads like an afterthought on the one day this is about the two of you.
It is not a second Raksha Bandhan
Rakhi is about protection: a thread, and a promise to look out for each other. Bhai Dooj is about the sister’s prayer for her brother’s long and healthy life, and about feeding him. So the message sounds different — less "you promised to protect me", more "may you live long, stay well and keep eating properly". Health, a long life and home food are the themes that fit this day.
