More occasions coming soon.
A link is a strange format for a personal message, and it works for reasons that are not obvious. It is worth understanding what it is good at before you pick an occasion below — it suits some messages far better than others.
What a link does that a text cannot
A message in a chat thread arrives between a delivery notification and a question about the weekend, and it scrolls out of view by the next day. A link opens as its own page with nothing else on it, which gives the words room and gives the reader a moment to react before they answer. It also persists — they can go back to it a year later, which a message in a thread effectively cannot be.
When not to use one
Bad news, apologies, and anything that needs a conversation should not be a link. The format creates a small amount of ceremony, and ceremony is wrong when someone needs to talk to you rather than read something you prepared. Links suit questions, celebrations, and thanks. They do not suit difficult conversations.
How the responses work
Every link carries a Yes or No answer, or a reaction and short reply for the wish occasions. Add your email when you create it and you are notified the moment they respond, which matters most for proposals where the waiting is the hard part. Links stay live for 90 days. No account is needed to create one and none is needed to answer.
Writing it well, whichever you pick
The advice is the same across all of them: one specific detail beats three general compliments. Name the thing they did, the moment you are referring to, the joke only the two of you have. If your message would still make sense with a different name pasted in, it is not finished. Each occasion page below has worked examples for that particular situation.
