Bhai Tika is the fifth and last day of Tihar, the day families travel home for. Sisters put a seven-colour tika on their brothers’ foreheads, place a makhamali garland around their necks and pour a circle of oil and water around them — asking Yama to spare them, the way Yamuna is said to have kept death away from her own brother. Brothers put tika on their sisters in return, touch their feet and give dakshina. With so many brothers and sisters working in the Gulf, Malaysia, Korea, Australia or the US, a lot of Bhai Tika now happens over a video call.
When the tika has to travel
Send the link on the morning of Bhai Tika, before the sait, so it is waiting when the tika would have been. Mind the time zones: a brother in Qatar is 2 hours 45 minutes behind Nepal, a sister in Sydney is more than 5 hours ahead, so agree on a video-call time that is midday for one of you. Keep the tika plate and the makhamali mala in front of the camera. And if someone has no brother or sister at home this year, the Balgopaleshwar temple in Rani Pokhari opens only on Bhai Tika, for exactly that.
Dai, bhai, didi, bahini — write to the right one
Nepali makes you choose: tapai for your dai or didi, timi for your bhai or bahini. Keep that in your message, because it is how they hear your voice. To an elder brother or sister, lead with respect and thanks ("dai, tapai ko maya ra sahayog ko lagi dherai dhanyabad"). To a younger one, lead with the blessing ("timi sadhai khusi ra swastha raha"). Cousins who grew up in the same house count as dai, bhai, didi and bahini too.
Make it about your Tihar
Every card says "Happy Tihar". What only you can write is the detail: the Deusi you sang door to door in your tole, whose sel roti is best, the year the diyo set the curtain on fire. One memory like that turns a festival greeting into a message from you — and it is the line they read out to the rest of the family.

When is the auspicious time (sait) for Bhai Tika?
The Nepal Panchang Nirnayak Samiti announces the exact sait a few weeks before Tihar — in 2025 it was 11:39 am. Officials follow the exact minute, but families can put tika any time around midday. Send your link in the morning so it is waiting before the tika.
Is Bhai Tika the same as Bhai Dooj?
They fall on the same day, but the customs differ. In Nepal, Bhai Tika is the fifth day of Tihar, with the seven-colour tika, the makhamali garland and the circle of oil and water.
