Chhath is four days of devotion to Surya Dev and Chhathi Maiya, and some of the hardest fasting of the year — after Kharna, the vrati goes without food or water until the rising sun on the fourth morning. Families from Bihar, Jharkhand, eastern Uttar Pradesh and Nepal’s Madhesh travel home for it, and those who cannot make it build ghats wherever they live, from Delhi to Mumbai to Dubai. Thekua, bamboo soops of fruit, the songs of Sharda Sinha — Chhath is as much about home as it is about the sun.
Respect the vrati first
Whoever is keeping the fast in your family — usually a mother, grandmother or aunt, sometimes a father or brother — is doing something genuinely hard. Before wishing everyone, send them a message of their own on Kharna or on the morning of Sandhya Arghya: thank them, wish them strength for the nirjala fast, and ask them to remember you at the ghat.
For everyone who could not go home
No festival pulls people home like Chhath, and no trains are harder to book. If you are away this year, say so plainly in the message — "mann ghate par ba" — and ask for a video call during Sandhya Arghya so you can see the ghat. Name the things you miss: the thekua, the ghat decorations, the songs at dawn. It will be read out to the whole family.
Send before the ghat, not during
On the evening of Sandhya Arghya and at dawn on Usha Arghya, everyone is at the water with the soop in their hands, not on their phones. Send your wishes in the morning or early afternoon of the third day, so they are read before the family leaves for the ghat, and save your "how was it?" for after paran on the fourth morning.
