Dashain is fifteen days long, and the whole country goes home for it — the buses out of Kathmandu are full for a week. Its heart is Vijaya Dashami, when elders put red tika and jamara on the foreheads of younger relatives and bless them for the year ahead. Everything else — kites over the rooftops, the bamboo ping in the village, new clothes, goat curry and card games that run past midnight — gathers around that one moment of blessing.
Giving a blessing or asking for one
A Dashain message depends on who is writing to whom. Elders give ashirbad: long life, health, success, "sadhai safal raha". Younger relatives ask for it, respectfully — to a grandparent or an elder relative, use hajur and end with dhog ("hajur lai dhog garchhu"). Getting that direction right matters more than any poetic line. For friends and colleagues, a simple "Bijaya Dashami ko hardik shubhakamana" is always correct.
When you cannot go home for tika
For everyone working in the Gulf, Malaysia, Korea, Japan or further away, Dashain is the festival that hurts most to miss. Send the link on the morning of Vijaya Dashami, Nepal time, before the family gathers for tika, then call while it is happening so your parents can hold the jamara up to the camera. Say in the message who you are missing by name — Aama, Buwa, Hajurama — not just "family".
Late is not late at Dashain
Tika visits carry on for days after Vijaya Dashami, all the way to Kojagrat Purnima, as families travel to relatives who live further away. So a wish that arrives on the eleventh or twelfth day is not an afterthought — it is part of the round of visits. Use that time for the relatives you could not reach on the main day, and write each of them a line of their own.

In Nepal, Dashain is fifteen days of family, tika and jamara from elders, kites and bamboo swings; in India, Dussehra is usually marked with Ram Lila and the burning of Ravan effigies. The two can even fall a day apart, because each follows its own calendar.
