Karwa Chauth is a day-long fast, kept from the sargi before sunrise until the moon comes up, when it is broken by looking at the moon — and then at your husband — through a sieve. Traditionally wives keep it for their husbands’ long life; in many homes now husbands keep it too. By evening everyone is hungry, a little light-headed and refreshing the moonrise time every ten minutes, which is exactly when a sweet message lands best.
Send it in the long afternoon
The morning is busy with sargi and getting ready; the evening belongs to the katha, the puja and the wait on the roof for the moon. The long, hungry stretch in between — mid to late afternoon — is when a message is read slowly and remembered. Do not send it at moonrise: the sieve, the karwa and the whole family are out, and your card will sit unopened until dinner.
If you are the one not fasting
Acknowledge the effort in concrete terms: she has had no food, and often no water, since before sunrise, for you. Then promise something real for the evening — you are cooking, you will be home before the moon, the first bite is yours to feed her. If you are apart this year, plan a video call for moonrise so she can see you through the sieve on the screen; long-distance couples have been doing it for years.
The first Karwa Chauth
For newlyweds the first Karwa Chauth is its own occasion — the first sargi from the mother-in-law, the bridal outfit out again, the whole family watching. Say that it is the first in your message; it turns an annual wish into a memory. The card stays live for 90 days, so it is still there to open again after the photos are shared.
