Writing for a reveal is different from writing a text. By the time your message appears, they have tapped an envelope, caught hearts and answered your silly question — they are paying full attention. That is a gift, and the message should reward it rather than feel like an anticlimax.
Open with the thing only you would say
The first line is the one they read while the confetti is still falling, so do not spend it on "Hi" or "So I made you this". Start with something that could only come from you: a callback to an inside joke, the name of the café where you met, the ridiculous nickname. Specific beats sweet. "I still think about you stealing my fries at Leopold" is warmer than "You mean so much to me", because it proves you were paying attention.
Short enough to read twice
You have up to 500 characters, and the best messages use about half. A reveal is a moment, not a letter — two to four sentences they can take in at once and then immediately read again. If you have more to say, say the rest in person. A message that ends slightly before they want it to is doing its job.
Let the question set up the punchline
The optional question just before the reveal ("Who loves the other more?") is there to make them laugh, and every answer is accepted. Use it as a setup: if the question is teasing, let the message turn sincere; if the question is sweet, a funny message lands well. The contrast is what makes the reveal feel crafted rather than templated.
Choosing the photo
Pick a photo of a moment, not a pose — the blurry one from the night you both could not stop laughing beats the polished profile picture. It appears at the top of the reveal, so it should be recognisable at a glance on a small screen. Photos are compressed on your phone, stripped of location data, and only visible through your private link.

Borrow one of these, or use it as a starting point and swap in a detail only the two of you would recognise.

How does the unlock game work?
They open your link, tap the envelope, then play two quick rounds: catch seven falling hearts, then tap the hearts while dodging the broken ones. An optional playful question comes next, and then your message — plus your photo, if you added one — is revealed with confetti.
What if they are bad at games?
They cannot lose. Missing a heart costs nothing, the game quietly slows down and makes the hearts bigger if they struggle, and a “Skip to message” button appears after 45 seconds. There is also a button-only mode for keyboards and screen readers.
Does it work on any phone?
Yes. It runs in the browser on Android and iPhone, including inside WhatsApp and Instagram, and it is built to stay smooth on budget phones and slow mobile data.
Can I add a photo?
Yes, one photo. It is compressed on your phone before upload, location data is removed, and it is only shown through your private link. It is deleted automatically after 90 days, or straight away if you delete the surprise.
Will I know when they open it?
If you add your email, we send you their reply when they write one. You never need an account.
Can I see what it looks like before sending?
Yes. The preview beside the form (or the Preview button on mobile) runs the exact game they will play, with your message and theme.
